Developing a Tourism Destination - St Helena

St Helena is an island situated in the South Atlantic Ocean, off the south-west coast of Africa. With a population of about 4,000, St Helena is now preparing a strategy to develop the island’s tourism industry further, with an airport planned for 2012. It's a self governing overseas territory of the UK and the Government there sees tourism as a way to become financially independent. It is also well aware of the negative impact tourism may have on the island and are determined to set out guidelines to conserve and protect the island’s culture, heritage and natural resources.
