A new report commissioned by CDMS to highlight fitness levels of the UK population has shown that Northern cities have better fitness levels than the South. Manchester came out on top with it's enthusiasm for both indoor and outdoor activities including hiking, sailing, cycling, camping and keep fit. Liverpool and Cardiff also scored highly by taking advantage of nearby facilities of country and coastline. Londoners fared worst with main reasons being lack of easily-accessible natural facilities and gym memberships too costly to maintain. Alongside London, Birmingham and Leeds are not much fitter, neither are the those across the border in Glasgow and Edinburgh. Ian Hubbard of CDMS comments, "The north/south fitness divide highlights a real split between the time-poor residents of the capital and the time-rich lifestyles of those further up the Fitness Index."
