Forget going away on holiday this year, because we have our very own beach right here in Birmingham city centre! But the Bullring and Birmingham City Council have already armed themselves with buckets and spades as they clash over who should have a beach in Birmingham this year. The Bullring seems to have won the first round already - they have gone ahead with their plans as 65 tonnes of sand arrived in St Martin's Square today. Attractions at the Bullring Beach will include volleyball tournaments, football coaching sessions for kids, sand sculpting, surf lessons and live music. Bullring managers claim to have had the idea first and openly informed the Council of its plans back in February; they say, “There is limited benefit to Birmingham if the city council simply replicates the Bullring beach.” But the Council are not backing down and are preparing to have their beach in Chamberlain Square - complete with a giant television screen broadcasting ballet and opera. So it's looking good for Brummies, we will be spoilt for choice!
