2013 Adventure Conference

Registration is now open for the 2013 Adventure Conference will take place from 21-23 May in Scotland. Papers to include:

•  Celebrating natural capital - covering issues of ecosophy, back-to-basics adventure, being and not necessarily doing, traditional adventure, friluftsliv and making the most of our natural capital.

•  Inclusive adventure - exploring the issue of accessibility to outdoor sport, leisure and tourism (in any of its guises) which pertain to adventure, including: who are the missing populations in the adventure world (eg. genders, ages, races, mobilities, socio-economic status)? How might they be enabled to experience the outdoors?

• Supporting the adventure experience: infrastructure and integration - investigations into the supporting elements that go to make the holistic adventure experience, from food, accommodation (in whatever form these may take), service quality, transportation, the promotion and marketing of experiences and strategies for stretching the season.

• Adventure responsibilities - is outdoor leisure and tourism really such a light-touch, groovy phenomenon? What is the real legacy of the ‘taming’ of adventure?

•  Creating / branding adventure destinations and sports venues - encompassing a range of elements such as resort development, product and destination management and marketing.

ICOT 2012 aims to contribute to the ongoing debate on the issues posed by special interest tourism. Although special interest tourism is being seen by many governments and tourism organisations as a means of alleviating the impacts of mass tourism, the conference will argue that little is still known in this area, therefore the conference will seek to inform future policy on the management of special interest tourism projects.  More details can be found on their website.

2012 Adventure Travel World Summit

Registration is now open for the ninth  Adventure Travel World Summit (ATWS) to be held at Lucerne in Switzerland, from 8th to 11th October 2012. Adventure Travel Trade Association’s (ATTA) annual event will be held  at the KKL Luzern (Culture and Congress Centre), built by renowned architect Jean Nouvel and is expected to draw 600 adventure tourism professionals from more than 50 nations  more...

Symposium - iDTR

This is an advance notice of a one day symposium convened by Dr Philip Stone and Professor Richard Sharpley to formally launch the Institute for Dark Tourism Research (iDTR) at the University of Central Lancashire (UK), will be held on 24 April 2012.

There will a panel of six keynote speakers, from both private and public sectors, the University of Cambridge, Kings College London, UCLan and the University of Limerick. The event is aimed at academics, students, industry and the media who have an interest in dark tourism.

The 6th National Conference of The Future of Culture, Tourism & Sport will be held at the Inmarsat Conference Centre, London on 14 September 2010. The conference will aim to bring together senior officers and elected members with local partners and national development agencies to co-ordinate their efforts and position culture, tourism and sport within the place-shaping agenda. The Journal of Tourism & Peace Research

A new international journal 'The Journal of Tourism and Peace Research' is to be published shortly that will aim to study and discuss all aspects of tourism and leisure in relation to peace, co-operation and conflict issues. There is an online version of the first issue available here.

A global conference on peace and tourism will be taking place 24 to 26 March 2011 in The Gambia. Presentations and proceedings from previous conferences are also available at the ICPTR website.

Last March, GAISF was rebranded SportAccord; the organisation brings together 87 International Federations and 17 Associated Members and works closely with the Olympic Movement; its aim is to 'unite, support and promote its members for the co-ordination and protection of their common aims and interests...while at the same time conserving and respecting their autonomy'. The website helps to carry this task forward by providing the latest news from across the sports sphere and the Sports Calendar highlights upcoming sporting events. SportAccord has two new projects in the pipeline - Multi-Sports Games and a Doping-Free Sport Unit which will provide support to its members.

The 13th World Sport for All Congress will take place in Jyväskylä, Finland, from 14 to 17 June 2010.
