Gambling Ads Ruled Out

Despite Blair’s attempts to change gambling policy, it now seems that along with plans for a supercasino in Manchester, advertisements for betting shops, gaming websites and slot machines will be abandoned. The Gambling Commission has recently published a report which includes responses to an earlier consultation paper seeking views on proposals about gambling advertisements and their impact on problem gambling. The report discusses whether further action needs to be taken in order that advertising and sponsorship is socially responsible.

The UK’s first Las Vegas-style supercasino had been planned for Manchester. James Purnell, the new culture secretary, did however suggest that proposals for 16 smaller casinos were likely to go ahead. He added that they would be reviewing the full range of proposed gambling legislation . The Prime Minister told MPs that he would consider other ways of regenerating poorer areas in order to meet economic and social needs other than the creation of supercasinos. However, Sir Richard Leese, leader of Manchester City Council, “We will continue to push for a destination casino in East Manchester, which we believe will deliver the maximum regeneration benefits.” A report looking at the social effects of gambling on society is due for publication in September.
